DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — Istanford led all the way in winning the $200,000 San Clemente Handicap by 2½ lengths at Del Mar on Saturday.
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Istanford ran one mile on the newly expanded turf course in 1:33.83 and paid $22.80, $10.80 and $7 at 10-1 odds.
Tepin returned $17.20 and $9.40 at 18-1 odds, while 5-2 shot My Conquestadory was another length back in third and paid $3.60 to show. Both horses are trained by Mark Casse, a newcomer to Del Mar this season.
Diversy Harbor, the 5-2 favorite, finished fourth.
The victory, worth $120,000, increased Istanford's career earnings to $328,365, with four wins in 10 starts.
In the $103,250 Osunitas Stakes for older fillies and mares, 11-1 shot Cozze Up won by a half-length over Warren's Veneda.
Ridden by Kent Desormeaux and trained by his brother Keith, Cozze Up ran 1 1/16 miles on the turf in a stakes record 1:39.95 and paid $24.20, $10.80 and $7.60.
Warren's Veneda returned $27 and $14.40, while Rhagori was another 1¼ lengths back in third and paid $5.80 to show.
