SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — An officer was shot twice and gravely wounded before his partner killed the gunman during a shootout in a residential area of San Bernardino early Friday.
Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said the wounded officer was rushed to a hospital in "very critical" condition and underwent surgery for gunshot wounds to the upper body.
The 31-year-old officer was shot when he and his partner stopped to talk to six people standing outside a home on a cul de sac before 3 a.m. Burguan said one of the men pulled out a gun and opened fire as the officers approached.
The officer who shot the gunman has been on the job for just two months.
Five people were detained and are being questioned by detectives.
